International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. It is an annual celebration of all the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. As we celebrate the spirit of ExtraordiNARIs, PeepingMoon spoke to Tina Datta about her views on gender equality and more.

Talking to us, the actress opened up about being an independent woman in a man's world, societal judgements and the way the industry has shaped her as a stronger person. She also spoke about facing casual sexism throughout her career.

Excerpts from the interview:

The entertainment industry was once looked down upon for being unfair to women. Was that a fear when you decided to become an actress?

I was 2 and a half when I started acting and wasn't in a space to think of this. But yes, a lot of women fear entering this industry only because of the stereotypes and labeling that a certain section of society does. But, I have always seen the greener side, the love and adulation the audience has given me.

Were you ever judged for your gender?

Each one of us has been, and it is still happening. Some people will troll you even if you sneeze. Women play many roles. She can be working yet take care of her family, doing household chores. Some people can’t see an independent woman balance the various sides of her life. Toh kya hai, log toh kuch kahenge, logo ka kaam hai kehna!! 

Society is easy to pass judgements about women. Did you ever experience harsh comments from the public?

Several times especially on my height and success. I can buy myself branded items, I have worked hard for it. These things are hard at times for society to gulp, but we can't keep shutting everyone na? I believe in letting my hard work and success answer them. 

You’ve come a long way in your professional career. Does that make you feel proud?

I'm proud of my journey and all that my struggle taught me!! I never let success sit in my head and that's my mantra. Be proud but don’t let the pride pop up!  

With time, what are the changes you’ve noticed in yourself? Did the industry make you tougher?

I have become more patient and understanding!! The industry has moulded me into a better person. All the life lessons and practical demonstrations carved me into a better warrior and taught me to fight back against all the odds in a more dignified manner.

Have you ever faced casual sexism in the industry?

Sometimes we all have faced such things. Be it a boy or a girl, sexism prevails. But again let me see the beautiful side of the industry that has given me so much.
