PeepingMoon Exclusive: Salman Khan's parents sent tiffins to on-duty policemen on his birthdays, now he's taking it forward in COVID times- Rahul Kanal on Being Haangryy

Salman Khan, who is coming to meet you all on Eid 2021 with Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, has kept his promise to provide wholesome entertainment. But along with that, the Bhaijaan of Bollywood has assured that no frontline worker, majorly the Mumbai police, BMC staff and health workers, don't remain hungry while serving the city in the middle of COVID-19's second wave. Salman has now revived his initiative named Being Haangryy. Several food trucks will be running on the streets of Mumbai to provide nutritious and tasty food to COVID-19 warriors.

The main person behind Being Haangryy is Yuva Sena leader Rahul Kanal. Along with Salman, Rahul is making sure COVID-19 warriors are well-fed and are taken care of. Right from operating the kitchen named Bhaijaanz to curating the menu with the superstar and appointing Yuva Sena members for execution, Rahul has been on his toes for many months.

On Sunday, when Salman visited Bhaijaanz to taste the meal before sending it out to the police and others, people went crazy. PeepingMoon.com got in touch with Rahul, who is one of the pillars of Being Haangryy. During the exclusive conversation, Rahul spoke about what is the idea behind the initiative, Salman's involvement and plans to send food kits to different parts of the state.

Excerpts from the conversation:

What was the idea behind starting Being Haangryy with Salman Khan?

On Salman Khan's birthdays and Eid, there is nakabandi and heavy police bandobast outside his Galaxy Apartments. Salma (Khan) aunty and Salim (Khan) uncle would always send tiffins from home for the police on duty. Salman told me, "Dekh Rahul, jab ghar ke bahar police hote hai toh hum tiffins bhejte hai. Abhi lockdown aa gaya hai, 24 hours service pe hai sab log (the frontline workers like police, BMC staff members, cleaning staff etc). Let’s do something so that they get basic chai, pani and nashta." There are 97 different points in Mumbai. The food packet comprises a water bottle, a cup of tea, a packet of biscuits and snacks. On Sunday, we had pav bhaji. Monday will be poha. Since most of them will be fasting on Tuesday, we have kept sabudana khichdi. One day we’ll have misal pav too. But, today morning, Salman called me saying we should add boiled eggs for protein and also include calcium and vitamin C tablets.

There are three phases to execute the whole plan. The first is the kitchen. Salman is taking care of everything, right from the menu to taste and even nutrition. On Sunday, he came in to taste the food. He regularly comes to check the arrangements. The second phase is transportation. The third phase is execution. We have a team of 150 Yuva Sena members and a helpline number- 9804098040. By God’s grace, the execution is smooth.

How many people did you reach out to in 2020? What’s the aim now?

2020 was a massive drive. We were carrying out ration, Eid and Diwali hamper. Last year, Being Haangryy must have delivered around 2 lacs ration kits along with over 10,000 Eid kits and 12, 000 Diwali kits. Right now, we have distributed 5000 packets. On an average, we reach out to 5000-6000 people per day. We are hoping to distribute 1.80 lacs to 2 lacs kits this month.

Like last year, are you and Salman Khan planning to distribute Eid packets? Are you planning to send kits to other parts of the state?

100% we will. The Eid kits have all the ingredients to make Sheer Qorma. Right from dry fruits to ghee, everything is included. Due to the lockdown, nobody can go out so they can at least make Sheer Qorma at home with the kits.

As of now, this is only for Mumbai. Due to interstate travel restrictions, you can't go anywhere. Otherwise, we would love to do so. We'll at least try to send Eid kits out of Mumbai via transport.

Till when will the food distribution go on?

We'll be doing it till May 15, 2021.

Amid his busy schedule, how does Salman Khan stay connected with you?

Salman is totally invested in Being Haangryy. He came to the kitchen thrice to taste the food and check its quality. On daily basis, he has 5-10 calls with us. He knows where we are going and what's happening.

People trolled Salman Khan for using the initiative to promote his film Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai due to the poster in a picture. What do you have to say?

The name of the restaurant is Bhaijaanz. This is a theme-based restaurant and everybody who has visited the place knows that the poster is there for the last 3 months. If he wants to promote a film, does he need to do all this? Negative people want controversy.
