It was only yesterday that reports of Divya Dutta reviving late Om Puri’s popular Punjabi play, Teri Amrita, started doing the rounds. It was said that Divya along with Gurdas Maan, was putting together the longest Hindi running modern play in Punjabi. It is the Punjabi version of the iconic Hindi play Tumhari Amrita that starred late veteran actor Farooq Sheikh and Shabana Azmi. But now we hear that the much-anticipated project has already hit a roadblock as late actor Om Puri's wife Nandita Puri has registered a case against Divya.
Reportedly, Nandita has lodged a complaint against the actress for taking over the project, under her banner Nalini Dutta Productions. Apparently, Divya wanted to start the play again and for its copyright, she had contacted Nandita. But even after a detailed discussion, Divya and Nandita could not arrive on the same page. Despite Nandita's hesitance, Divya went on to announce the play, which did not go well with late Om Puri's wife. Eventually, Nandita filed a complaint against the trio, Javed Siddiqui, Divya and Amrik Gill, in Versova police station in Mumbai.
The complaint alleged that Divya's company along with Gurdaas Maan has kept its premiere in Mumbai on September 9, without Nandita's consent.
Meanwhile, Nandita's advocate Adnan Shaikh said that the complaint has been also been provided to various senior officials, apart from that to Versova police station as she wants to make sure that the staging of this play is stopped. According to Nandita, Divya has no right to violate the play's rights and staging it without her consent.
Now under current circumstances, we wonder if the play will be staged or not?
For the unversed, the Indian adaptation of the play first premiered in 1992 and was performed for over 20 years by Shabana Azmi and the late Farooq Sheikh. It was conceived by Javed Siddiqui and stopped playing only after the lead actor's sudden demise.
