Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saif Ali Khan, and Radhika Apte in the lead, the Indian and the international media has been raving about India's first Netflix original, Sacred Games. Directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, Sacred Games is based on Vikram Chandra's eponymous novel of 2006 and premiered worldwide on Netflix on July 6.
However, the political incorrectness and unabashed truth depicted in the series managed to irk the sentiments of a certain section in India. It further led to a plea that was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking the removal of content that according to them "tarnished" the image of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. It also complains that the show has a scene in which Nawaz, the protagonist, is seen "abusing our Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi calling him f***u, which translated as pu*** in the subtitle of the show".
Now in a recent development, the Delhi High Court was informed on Tuesday that Netflix has not changed the alleged objectionable word that was used to describe former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in Sacred Games. As per a leading news agency, senior advocate Chander Lal, appearing for Netflix told the HC, "My instructions are that we don't want to change the word."
Moreover, a bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar was told by the counsel for Netflix that a partly-wrong statement was made by him earlier when he said, "Now, we are using the word 'wimp' as the English translation of Hindi word 'fattu'."
Currently, neither Netflix has changed the word in the English subtitles nor they want to change it.
Reportedly, the bench has listed the matter for further hearing on September 20. "Nobody is pressing or forcing you. You take your own decision, whether you want to change the word or not. We are not going to compel you," the bench mentioned during the hearing.
