Last evening, The Crime Branch of Thane police arrested Mumbai-based lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui for allegedly illegally obtaining Call Detail Records (CDR) from private detectives. Rizwan represents several celebrities like Nawauddin Siddiqui and Kangana Ranaut.

As per Sukhada Narkar, spokesperson of Thane police, Rizwan was summoned for recording his statement after his name came up during the probe, but he failed to turn up, hence, the police officials went to his Mumbai residence and took him in custody.

Following his arrest in connection with the CDR racket, Rizwan issued a statement which reads as:

"No Section 41 A notice has been served on me. Clients confidential data is also seized by police without any notice and without any court order. Despite my statement being recorded on the 23rd of February 2018 in the presence of my clients' brother Mr. Shamasuddin Siddiqui, they did not corroborate the said statement with my client nor did they bother to follow up with my said client for reasons best known to the police.

I had already served a letter to the police to let me take the permission of the bar council before submitting evidence however despite co-operation and despite showing evidence the officer in charge did not pay any heed to that and has arrested me without following the due process of law for reasons best known to him."

Last week the Thane police had said that they had also summoned actor, his wife and his lawyer in connection with the investigation. They were summoned after some of the arrested accused had told the police that Rizwan had obtained the CDR of the actor's wife from private detectives. The actor and his wife are yet to record their statements, police added.

For the uninitiated, the entire matter is part of the larger CDR leakage racket that involved private detectives illegally sourcing CDR of people for their clients. India's first woman private detective, Rajani Pandit, was also arrested in this connection, in February, in addition to four more detectives.

Last week, both Nawaz and wife Anjali expressed their shock when they came across the news. While Anjali posted an open letter on her Facebook addressing the matter, Nawaz took to Twitter to comment on the matter.
