Luca Trailer: Pixar’s coming-of-age film uses sea monster mythology to talk about inclusion and respect

Pixar looks like it has another winner on its hands with Luca, a coming-of-age fantasy set in the Italian Riviera. It follows two young boys during an unforgettable Italian summer as they grow in their friendships and come to terms with their individual identities. However, there is a difference because everything is different below the surface. Because in Luca, our protagonists are sea monsters! However, through the sea-monster mythology the film talks about the very human concept of inclusion and respect.

In the trailer, Luca and his new friend Alberto hide their secret from everyone else in their seaside Italian town- where, fish are food, not friends. The film stars Jaco Tremblay who leads the cast as the titular Luca Paguro while Jack Dylan Grazer plays his adventurous friend, Alberto Scorfano, who introduces Luca to the surface world. Maya Rudolph, Emma Berman, Marco Barricelli and Jim Gaffigan also star.

The two discover the ability to transform into humans when they are dry and decide to explore the nearby town, and eventually entering a race that will allow them to win enough money to buy a Vespa- which they think is a magical vehicle that can take them anywhere in the world.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Enrico Casarosa and produced by Andrea Warren, Luca  releases June 18 on Disney+.
