‘Uncle Frank’ trailer: Paul Bettany confronts his gay life while on a road trip with Sophia Lillis and Peter Macdissi

The first trailer of Alan Ball’s LGBTQ drama Uncle Frank has been dropped by Amazon Studios. The film written and directed by Ball is loosely based on his life growing up in the South in the 1970s. The film stars Paul Bettany who plays Frank Bledsoe, a gay man not accepted by his conservative family.

Frank’s lovable nature is liked by his niece Beth (played by Sophia Lillis) but she is unable to comprehend why he is bullied and ostracized by his family. When she leaves her rural Southern hometown to study at New York University where her beloved Uncle Frank is a revered literature professor, she gets a jolt when she discovers that he is homosexual and lives with his long-time partner Walid “Wally” Nadeem (Peter Macdissi) - an arrangement that he has kept secret from his family for years.

With Frank’s past childhood traumas right on his heels, a reluctant Frank must decide who is going to be in the face of the people closest to him. "So when you told me I should be what I want to be, that was just bullshit?" Beth inquires. "You know, that conversation changed my life,” she tells him egging him to embrace his homosexuality and stand up to his family.

The film also stars Margo Martindale, Judy Greer, Stephen Root, Steve Zahn and Lois Smith, is slated to be released on November 25 on Amazon Prime Video.
