‘Radioactive’ trailer: Rosamund Pike’s Marie Curie fights for her place in the sun in the male-dominated field of academia

Amazon Prime Video dropped the full trailer for this biographical film Radioactive. Radioactive is a biopic on the Nobel Prize winning scientist Marie Curie and features Oscar nominee Rosamund Pikes as the main lead. The film is directed by Marjane Satrapi and had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for her ground-breaking research in radioactivity (a term coined by her), not only once but twice and that too in two different fields (Physics and Chemistry). She also discovered two elements, Polonium and Radium.

The trailer of Radioactive spans from the 1870s to the modern era and shows Curie’s legacies- her passionate relationships, scientific breakthroughs and her efforts to break the glass ceiling in a field dominated by men. The trailer shows Pike taking a dig at the society’s prejudice against women as she says, “I want to tell you about radium, a most peculiar and remarkable element because it does not behave as it should…which, now that I think about it, is a spot-on metaphor for me, an intellectual woman in this male-dominated field.”

Pike’s Curie meets with fellow scientist Pierre Curie with whom she forges an alliance professionally and goes on to marry as well. Their discoveries and their Nobel Prize propel the devoted couple into the international limelight. The film also recounts the struggles Curie faced as academia was averse to women scientists and their achievements were often sidelined in favour of their male colleagues.

Radioactive also stars Sam Riley, Anya Taylor-Joy, Cara Bossom, Aneurin Barnard, Simon Russell Beale, Tim Woodward, Jonathan Aris, Mirjam Novak, and Michael Gould. Based on Lauren Redniss’ graphic novel of the same name, Radioactive is written by Jack Thorne. It is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Paul Webster. The film is a co-production by Working Title Films and StudioCanal in partnership with Shoebox Films. The film will be available for streaming on Prime Video in the U.S. on July 24.
