Abhay Deol made his Bollywood debut in 2005 romantic drama Socha Na Tha and since then, he has impressed the audience with her versatile acting in films like Dev.D, Aisha, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The actor was last seen in a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan's Zero and is now all set to foray into digital space with Netflix's Chopsticks, a Sachin Yardi-directorial featuring Mithila Palkar and Vijay Raaz.
During a recent interview with a leading daily, Abhay was asked why he is seen intermittently in Bollywood, to which he said, "No one is giving me any work." He further added, "The kind of content I want to be part of, is hardly made. At the same time, I have not closed myself to anything. As long as it excites me, I am game for it." When prodded about his digital debut, he quipped with his signature dry wit, "There's also a goat in the film, who has acted better than all of us."
Interestingly, Abhay completes 15 years in the industry in 2020 and even after so many years, he remains un-Bollywoodised and has carved a niche for himself. Stating that he wouldn't want his career shaping up any other way, Abhay pointed out, "It is a choice I have made. The kind of stories I like often comes from debutant directors. So, to ensure that the film sees the light of day is a long process in itself," adding, "I haven't bagged awards or made any landmark project, so there won't be much to celebrate. If you go against the mainstream narrative, you do not get the [desired] visibility." Not to forget, the Deol family now has two MPs in Sunny Deol and Hema Malini. Prodded if he has an inclination towards politics apart from acting, Abhay signed off by saying. "I am not cut out for it. I am striving for change in my own space."
Apart from Chopsticks, Abhay will also feature in Jungle Cry, a biopic based on on the life of Rugby coach Rudraksha Jena of Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS).
