PeepingMoon 2018 Half Yearly Report: 13 films that ruled the Box-Office

A mix and match of both quality and numbers -- 2018 remained so far so good for Bollywood. With more than 10 films doing good business at the Box Office, Bollywood performed the best in this decade. At least that's what the Box Office report of the last six months prove.

We had good content-based commercial cinema like Pad Man, Hichki, October, Raazi, releasing in the first half of the year, garnering their fair share of appreciation. We also had a few films faring an unexpected good business -- Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, 102 Not Out and Raid among others.

Here follows the list of Bollywood films released in the first half of 2018 arranged in the order of their earnings. Take a look:

SANJU (June 29 - still running)

The movie, released on June 29, is still running to packed houses. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, it's a biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Sanju was already one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The excitement to see Ranbir absorbing the mannerisms of Dutt, the controversial life story of the actor and Hirani's history of making films that resonate with the audiences just added to the fervour. The movie has crossed an exceptional figure of Rs 200 cr within just seven days of its release with the earnings Rs 202. 51 cr (approx) till July 6, 2018 and is still running successfully.

Padmaavat (January 25)

After a long fight with fringe groups and adopting changes in the film, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus finally released to packed theatres. The Deepika Padukone-RanveerSingh-ShahidKapoor starrer met with mixed reviews but turned out to be a hit at the Box Office. The film was released on around 3750 screens and went on to garner Rs 301 cr (approx) in its lifetime run. The movie enjoyed an extended weekend and also had special selected previews on Wednesday, Jan 24. It opened on an excellent note at the Box Office and turned out to be the biggest first weekend grosser with the collections of Rs 114 cr (approx). However, now after collecting Rs 120. 06 cr (approx) in its first weekend, Sanju has taken over the same position.

The film went on collecting Rs 585 cr worldwide.

Race 3 (June 15)

The audience couldn't warm up to the big Salman Khan Eid release this year which turned out to be an average grosser at the Box Office. While it's still running on some screens, the lifetime collection of Race 3 is expected to end at not more than Rs 166 cr (approx) in India. Here's the 19-days week-wise breakup of the film:

Week One - Rs 139. 97 cr
Week Two - Rs 24. 64 cr
Week Three - Rs 90 lakh (approx) - Five days

Baaghi 2 (March 30)

Bollywood was long waiting for a good action film and Tiger Shroff's Baaghi 2 just served the purpose. The movie, directed by Ahmed Khan was an instant hit at the Box Office and received an excellent opening, minting Rs 72. 48 cr (approx) in its first weekend. Tiger's splendid action generated excitement and Baaghi 2 went on to collect Rs 160. 74 cr (approx) in its lifetime run.

 Raazi (May 11)

No one expected this Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal starrer to show such splendid performance at the Box Office. But, as they say content is the king, the audience bowed down to Alia's performance and Meghna Gulzar's direction and gave thumbs up to the film. Made on a budget of around Rs 38 cr, Raazi collected Rs 123 cr (approx) in its lifetime run, which is the highest any woman-oriented film has minted in the country.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (February 23)

The movie got mixed reviews. However, the songs and a youth-oriented content worked for the film. The Kartik Aaryan and Nushrat Barucha starrer crossed Rs 100 cr mark at the Box Office without any major star appeal or a festive day release. Its lifetime business stands at Rs 113 cr (approx).

Raid (March 16)

Released on around 3250 screens in India, the Ajay Devgn and Ileana D'Cruz starrer became a sleeper hit. Despite having a below average opening, it turned out to be a hit and collected an amount of Rs 103 (approx) cr in its lifetime run at the Box Office. The film was about an official's fight against corruption and a good word-of-mouth worked in its favour.

PadMan (February 9)

The movie was appreciated for its content and opened on an average note at the Box Office. With the presence of one of the most bankable actors in Bollywood, Akshay Kumar, Pad Man was about female menstrual hygiene and aimed at creating awareness about periods, which, unfortunately, is still a taboo in many rural parts of India. The movie went on to garner Rs 82 cr in its lifetime run and remains an average grosser.

Veere Di Wedding (June 1)

The film was heavily promoted as Hindi cinema's first out-and-out female buddy film. Starring Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania in the lead, it fared impressively and majorly worked in the metros, collecting Rs 81 (approx) in its lifetime run at the Box Office.

The film minted Rs 138.25 cr worldwide.

102 Not Out (May 4)

Image result for 102 not outDespite releasing in just around 1300 screens, this Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor starrer showed up the courage to fare unexpectedly good at the Box Office. The movie received good reviews and collected a total of Rs 66.7 cr (approx) in its lifetime run when it was made on a budget of around Rs 35 cr.

Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (May 25)

One of the important movies that Bollywood produced this year, Parmanu... was a hit at the Box Office. It featured John Abraham and Diana Penty in the lead and opened to great moolah at the Box Office with its first week collections being around Rs 35. 8 cr approx. The movie was made on a budget of around Rs 44 cr and it went on to garner an impressive Rs 65. 36 cr (approx) in its lifetime run at the Box Office.

Hichki (March 23)

This Rani Mukerji film was released in just around 975 screens but fared far better than what was expected of it. The film aimed at creating awareness about the Tourette syndrome among the masses and the audience loved the content. While it opened on a below average note, Hichki became a hit at the Box Office with the lifetime collections of Rs 46. 18 cr (approx). Produced by Maneesh Sharma and directed by Sidharth P Malhotra, it had a budget of not more than Rs 20 cr.

October (April 20)

Varun Dhawan kept his record of delivering a no flop in his career with this one. October was a different film and something that the audience doesn't associate Varun with. But, that factor certainly didn't seem to affect the film's performance and it fared well at the Box Office. After receiving mixed reviews, the Shoojit Sircar-directorial garnered Rs 54.74 cr (approx) and turned out to be a decent grosser.

With more than 10 films being hit or above this year already, seems like 2018 is going to be a year that would be remembered for long. The next half also looks promising with Sanju continuing to do a phenomenal business and biggies like Gold, Thugs Of Hindostan, Student Of The Year 2, Zero and Simmba lined-up to hit the theatres. Not to mention the other films which are expected to fare well at the Box Office -- Fanney Khan, Dhadak, Karwan, Namaste England, Sui Dhaaga, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Kedarnath, and Total Dhamaal to name a few.
