PeepingMoon 2020: Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2 to Yeh Rishety Hain Pyaar Ke, TV shows that shut shop due to COVID-19 pandemic

The year 2020 has been full of ups and downs for everyone and for the TV industry it was no different. The television industry faced stiff challenges and several big-budget shows, which started with a bang, soon went off air during the lockdown. Even comedy show like and Gangs of Filmistaan, which was launched post lockdown, had to bear the brunt and go off air within just two months of its launch.

The abrupt ending of several telly shows not only left the cast and crew sad but also the audience disappointed. While some shows bid adieu due to low TRP ratings, few others faced budget challenges amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Without further ado, let's look back at the TV shows that went off air in 2020.

Nazar 2

In March, Star Plus's acclaimed show Nazar 2 came to an end, abruptly, leaving fans heartbroken. Headlined by Monalisa, the show telecasted its last episode on March 20, a week after the nationwide ban on shoots was imposed. In May, producer Gul Khan talked about the reason behind the show going off-air. Gul had revealed that Nazar 2 went off-air because the budget of the show was canceled mid-way. She said, in the post-COVID-19 world, the advertisement budget will be limited and it will be difficult to keep expensive shows going. Gul added that Nazar 2 was mounted on a lavish scale with plenty of visual effects and action sequences. However, due to budget constraints, the makers had to end the show.

Beyhadh 2

Counted amongst one of the most popular daily soaps, Sony TV's Beyhadh 2 makers decided to bring the second season of the show featuring our very own Maya aka Jennifer Winget in the lead. Beyhadh 2 that began in December 2019 surprisingly went off-air on March 31, 2020. Also starring Shivin Narang and Ashish Chowdhry in leading roles, the show could not meet the expectations of the fans, probably the reason why the TRP was too low. That was the main reason the makers decided to pull it off from television. But it's abrupt ending did leave many disappointed.

Naagin 4

Colors TV's Naagin 4 had several controversies tied up to its name. From Rashami Desai's abrupt exit to Nia Sharma quitting because of monetary issues, the show co-starring Vijayendra Kumeria witnessed a plethora of ups and downs. Ekta Kapoor's Naagin 4 was having a great run until the COVID-19 pandemic hit the entertainment industry and shoots were halted. Even then, coping with the new guidelines, Ekta resumed shooting for her daily soap on June 27, 2020, but the finale was shot in July and the show came to an end in August 2020. No official reason behind the Naagin 4 going off-air was given, however, Ekta had mentioned that the fifth season will soon go on floors and will be bigger and better than the previous seasons. Naagin 5 soon went on-air with Surbhi Chandna, Dheeraj Dhoopar and Mohit Malhotra in the lead.

Bhakarwadi

Sony Sab's show Bhakarwadi bid adieu to viewers on August 28 this year after a one-and-half-year long run. There were reports doing the rounds that the show, that starred Paresh Ganatra, Bhakti Rathod and Akshita Mugdal, went off-air because a staff member passed away due to Coronavirus and a few others were infected. Producer JD Majethia, however, denied these rumours and said 'COVID-19 was not the reason for the channel to pull the plug on the show.'

Ishq Subhan Allah

Zee Tv's Ishq Subhan Allah went go off air on October 2 after a two-and-half-year long run. Its lead actors Eisha Singh and Adnan Khan announced the news on their social media back in September as they said they will miss shooting for the romantic drama. The reason behind the show bidding adieu was not officially announced. However, reports suggested that it was because of low TRP rating that the channel decided to end the show.

Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2

Post lockdown, while shooting of TV shows resumed, many serials were also pulled off air abruptly. Even Star Plus' Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2, which garnered a lot of attention in 2018 when it was launched, went off air on October 3 after a successful run of almost two years, leaving the audience a bit puzzled. Asked about it, Erica Fernandes, who played Prerna Sharma in the show, had shared, “Every good thing comes to an end, and daily soaps are no different." The show starred Parth Samthaan as the lead actor who garnered appreciation for his chemistry with Erica. KZK2's sudden ending did not go down very well with the fans as they expected a longer run, like its first season. The reason behind the show's end was reported to be its dropping TRP ratings.

Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke

On October 17, Star Plus decided to pull the plug of Shaheer Sheikh's and Rhea Sharma's famous show Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke. The show was replaced by Devoleena Bhattacharjee's Saath Nibhana Saathiya 2Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke, which premiered last year in March, managed to win the audience's heart and also made an immediate entry into the TRP charts. However, a sudden dip in the ratings made the channel end the show.

Gangs of Filmistan

Star Bharat's Gangs of Filmistan, which was launched on August 31, could not even continue for two months and wrapped up on October 24. Even before its launch, the show went into trouble as actress Shilpa Shinde blamed Sunil Grover for taking the center stage and not giving chance to other actors to perform. While producer Preeti Simoes denied Shilpa's allegations, the show could not garner eyeballs and received bad TRP ratings. The channel had to end the show in October end.

Shubharambh

Colors' Shubharambh, which had a massive launch in December last year on the stage of Salman Khan's Bigg Boss 13, bid goodbye to the viewers on November 13. Actor Akshit Sukhija, who played the male lead, Raja, in the show was disappointed that the show was winding up and believed that like many other shows, the daily soap suffered because of the pandemic. The show that starred Mahima Makwana as the lead actress enjoyed good TRP ratings but was shut due to the updated guidelines of COVID-19.
