Netflix's 'Marriage Story' trailers offer dual perspectives to matrimony in Scarlett Johansson’s and Adam Driver’s film

In a unique move Netflix dropped not one but two teaser trailers for Noah Baumbach's upcoming film Marriage Story. The companion trailers titled What I Love About Nicole and What I Love About Charlie give the perspective of both the protagonists’ viewpoints on their marriage. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in the lead as the seemingly feuding couple, the trailers feel like marriage therapy sessions.

Each trailer gives a perspective about how the husband and wife feel about each other and contains different footage until both close on a sour note. The couple try to iron out their differences as Nicole says, “I thought we should talk,” whereas Charlie replies with, “I don’t know how to start.” In the first trailer, Charlie (Driver) shares the best things about his wife Nicole and says, “She’s a great dancer, infectious. She is a mother who plays, really plays. She knows when to push me and when to leave me alone.”

On the other hand, Nicole (Johansson) lists down what she loves about her husband. She says “He loves being a dad, almost annoying how much he loves it. He cries easily at movies. He’s very clear about what he wants.”

Baumbach who has written and directed Marriage Story said in a statement, “Marriage Story is a love story that reveals itself within the breakdown. With these companion trailers, I wanted to show the relationship through the eyes of both characters. There are many sides to every story, and the movie embraces these different viewpoints in order to find the shared truth.”

The film also stars Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Julie Hagerty, Merritt Wever, Azhy Robertson, Wallace Shawn, Martha Kelly, Mark O'Brien and Ray Liotta. The film will be released on Netflix and in theatres this fall.
