Mentorship to employment, CDFA implements ‘systemic changes’ for black talents within fashion industry amidst ongoing racism protests

As the United States of America continues to burn amidst the political and communal unrest triggered by the death of an African-American man George Floyd, the fashion fraternity has stepped up to discourage racism in the country. Renowned fashion houses like Fenty, Gap, Pretty Little Thing, amongst many others have pledged contributions to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement as a token of solidarity against this deep-rooted racism.

While the designers and fashion labels are doing their bit on an individual level, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CDFA) has implemented some initiatives from their end with ‘immediate effect’ to do their bit against this social injustice.

Sharing a post on their social media space, the CFDA has announced to implement the systemic changes within the fashion industry. Post its board meeting held on June 4, 2020, the council came up with some initiatives that will benefit the people of colour.  With an aim to achieve a racially balanced industry, CFDA plans to start an in-house employment opportunity that would identify the black talents and pair them with companies looking to hire. From mentoring and internship programs to fundraising activities for charities that support black communities, the fashion body has penned down a systematic plan regarding all the aspects.

Lastly, it has urged the members of the CFDA family to restructure their workforce racially and challenged the retail sector of the fashion industry to include the representative of the black talent in the roaster of their products and assortments.

Now that’s a start for a change within. What are your thoughts on this?
