Giving coverstars a miss, Elle and Grazia India send across the message of ‘together apart’ with their digitally accessible April issues

With the world battling with COVID-19 Pandemic, it’s extremely important to stay home and stay sane amidst the chaos. With the rise in the number of cases, the restlessness seems to be increasing with each passing day.

Doing their bit in this fight against the global crisis, Grazia India and Elle India have released their issue covers highlighting the importance of staying apart, together!

Let's face it: We're dealing with a whole new kind of present in the wake of the Covid-19 health crisis. For us at Grazia, it’s more important than ever to share stories that can educate and inspire, and in turn, set new and bright narratives for the future. We responded quickly to these unprecedented times with a temporary rebrand, a launch of an e-version of the magazine, complementing our online digital content. . . Our April digital cover explores the theme: Six Degrees of Separation – the existential premise that everyone in the world is connected to everyone else in the world by a chain of no more than six acquaintances. However, this took on a whole new meaning for us while brainstorming for this issue. We realised community spirit used to be about coming together; now it’s about staying apart. But despite the varying degrees of separation and disparity, we hope this issue will offer some much-needed inspiration to everybody in difficult times – and serve as a reminder that while we might be alone, we are in this together. As a gesture of solidarity to home-bound readers enduring this period of self-isolation, we will be making our April 2020 issue free and available to access digitally. Stay tuned for the FREE DOWNLOAD link. The cover has been illustrated by visual artist, Sameer Kulavoor (@sam_kulavoor, @bombayduckdesigns)

The coronavirus pandemic is changing how we live our daily lives. From finding comfort in a familiar space to unlearning and relearning to thrive each day. We asked various homegrown illustrators to design digital covers capturing the myriad moods of this period of self-isolation and in turn acknowledge the uniqueness of our situation. Each cover is a reminder that we're not stuck in a loop -- and that everyday is still a new day. . “As we continue to battle this global pandemic, two sides of the story emerge. One, where we find ourselves at home, trying to keep it together, staying sane, and adjusting. The other side belongs to those who do not have this option, and those who don't have access to bare necessities imperative for survival in isolation. The least we can do is complain lesser about being homebound, and instead, redirect our energies into strengthening the relationship we have with ourselves. Being able to stay at home and relax is a privilege that not everyone has in these trying times. Use this time to introspect, better yourself, and help those in need. They say - "You cannot give from an empty cup" - and this world needs you more than ever right now, and will continue to, long after this is all over. Try to help in whatever little way you can, even if it means by simply staying at home." . . Illustration: @anjalimehta92

But it also focuses on the fact that in spite of the social distancing, we all are in this together!

Elle India took it to their Instagram to convey their informed decision to not carry their planned cover shoot.

ELLE as a magazine has always been empathetic of the current climate. We took the informed decision to not carry our planned cover shoot. It just wouldn’t be right—and it wouldn’t be fair on our readers especially when our world is at the edge of a breakdown. Instead, we worked with three exceptional artists to create imagery that would be symbiotic of world view right now. . For our second cover, we worked with @Juhivishnani and @Shiva_n_ of November (@nvmbr_in), to create imagery that would be symbiotic of the world view right now. The duo played with typography to explore the idea of dispersion. . As a gesture of goodwill, our April issue will be available for free download on elle.in on April 8. . We asked the acclaimed Franco-German artist @keratill to interpret her idea of social distancing. “For me, India is all about colour. I tried to visualise social distancing without making it scary or dark, and because it is still about connection, I used the dashed lines,” says Kera. With their tagline ‘Together Apart’, the issue vouches for social distancing while being digitally connected.

As a token of goodwill, both the magazine publications made their April issues free for download. So let’s complain less, rejuvenate, reenergize and rise!
