Everybody is concerned about sanitary hygiene in the rural areas of India but there's a difference between being concerned and taking a step towards resolving the concern. For the past year, it has been Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar. From making a film on menstrual hygiene, PadMan, to taking initiatives on a state level, the actor has truly been a real and reel life hero. His initiative tries to generate awareness in rural areas about low-cost sanitary napkins and its usage and hygiene.

Now it is Miss World, Manushi Chhillar who came forward and spoke about the issue. Manushi told a leading daily that she was distressed to find that women in rural Haryana had no access to sanitary pads and some felt shy asking shopkeepers for pads. The model used her Miss World platform to highlight the urgent need for increased menstrual hygiene awareness in India.

After speaking about the need for increased menstrual awareness the super-model today launched world's first compostable menstrual hygiene pad machine on the 100th birthday of Africa's legendary anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela in his hometown in Mvezo. Manushi also became a part of the historic centenary celebrations of the iconic figure.

Manushi had earlier said, “I am not yet a doctor but I am not voiceless. And this voice and the desire to use it, to make a difference in the world around me drove me to start Project Shakti which aims to address an issue faced by millions of women in India – that lack of access to safe and affordable menstrual hygiene management.”

This young super-model who has made her country proud is only giving us more reason to be proud of her.
