Udham Singh in Sardar Udham to Sam Manekshaw in Sam Bahadur: Decoding Vicky Kaushal excellence in portraying real-life characters on screen

Vicky Kaushal’s much-awaited Sam Bahadur is all set to hit the big screens on December 1. But if one takes a closer look at his filmography, Vicky skillfully manages to portray real-life characters exceptionally well on-screen and delivers the true essence of every role making one believe in the existence of each one of them.

Let’s delve deeper into the timeline of some of the films done by the actor, based on real-life character:

His role of Ranbir Kapoor’s friend in Sanjay Dutt’s biopic Sanju (2018) got him noticed from all the quarters, and is one of the roles after which he was majorly acknowledged among audiences and critics alike. Vicky portrayed Kamli a real life friend of Sanjay in the film, whose actual name is Paresh Ghelani.

Raazi (2018) was another notable film where Vicky portrayed the role of Iqbal Syed, a Pakistani army officer. He got many laurels for his role as he managed to get into the skin of the character. The film was an adaptation of Harinder Sikka’s spy novel ‘Calling Sehmat’ which was based on a real life story of Sehmat Khan (portrayed by Alia Bhatt in the film) who turned into a R&AW agent and married to Vicky’s character on the request of her father.

Next is Uri: The Surgical strike (2019), a film that is based on the Pakistani attack of 2016 which further arose many debates. As the film was made upon the surgical strike that was initiated by the Indian Army in the response to the attack, Vicky who portrayed the role of Major Prashant Siwach spent a lot of time with the Indian Army in order to be more true to his character and understand the situations and conditions better that the officers have to go through. After all, Josh is always high!

And now to forget his portrayal of Udham Singh in Sardar Udham (2021) which earned him Filmfare award for Best Actor (Critics) and Best Film (Critics). Udham Singh was an Indian revolutionary who assassinated Michael O’ Dwyer for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh attack during which a number of people lost their lives. And Vicky was the perfect choice for the role.

And now, the actor is going to portray the role of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in the upcoming film Sam Bahadur, which will delve into the life of a military legend. The hype around his look, dialogue delivery is already creating a storm and fans can't wait for the magic to unfold in less than a month's time.

After Sam Bahadur, Vicky will also be seen as historical figure Sambaji Rao in Chhava.
