Humans of New York founder Brandon Stanton comments over Humans Of Bombay and People Of India copyright infringement issue

Humans Of Bombay is a story-telling platform based in Mumbai and founded by Karishma Mehta in 2014. It recently made the headlines after accusing their competitor, People Of India of the copyright infringement and claimed that not only the unique format of storytelling was replicated but even the published content was identical. Following the matter, the notice was issued to the People of India by the Delhi’s High Court on September 18 scheduling the next hearing for October 11. As stated by the justice Prathiba Singh, the photos were found identical.

Although people were in support of Humans Of Bombay founder, the story got a new twist as the founder of the Humans Of New York founder Brandon Stanton stepped in and commented over the case. He said that the entire format of Humans of Bombay has actually been copied from his blog and although he didn’t sue anyone for it, it’s not right for others to do it when they aren’t the official creators themselves. Taking to Twitter, he commented,“I've stayed quiet on the appropriation of my work because I think  @HumansOfBombay shares important stories, even if they've monetized far past anything I'd feel comfortable doing on HONY. But you can't be suing people for what I've forgiven you for.”

But it didn’t end here as Humans of Bombay responded even further. The Tweet said, “We are grateful to HONY & Brandon for starting this storytelling movement. The suit is related to the IP in our posts & not about storytelling at all. We tried to address the issue amicably before approaching the Court, as we believe in protecting our team’s hard work. PFA.”

Post this, the founder of the Humans Of Bombay, Karishma has been facing a backlash from the netizens who went on to comment that she herself stole the format, monetized it and is now proclaiming rights on others.
