India is shining at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)! The organisers of the prestigious awards issued the longlist on Friday and SS Rajamouli's much-celebrated RRR and Shaunak Sen's All That Breathes made the cut. This is the initial longlisting round, for the unversed, and the films will advance to the nominating stage of voting.
RRR, starring Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt and others, featured on the longlist in the Best Film (Non-English) category. Other films in the category are All Quiet on the Western Front, Argentina, 1985, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, Close, Corsage, Decision To Leave, EO, Holy Spider and The Quiet Girl.
All That Breathes, headlined by Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, made it to the BAFTA longlist in the Best Documentary category. It will compete with documentaries like All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, A Bunch Of Amateurs, Fire of Love, The Ghost of Richard Harris, Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song, Louis Armstrong's Black & Blues, McEnroe, Moonage Daydream and Navalny.
On the other hand, Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi failed to make it to the longlist. Despite extensive campaigning by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and critical acclaim from critics globally, the biographical drama didn't qualify.
BAFTA nominations will be announced on January 19 and the awards will take place on February 19.
