Former Indian volleyball captain & wife of Milkha Singh, Nirmal Kaur, succumbs to COVID-19 complications

Former Indian volleyball captain Nirmal Milkha Singh passed away on Sunday due to COVID-19 complications. The wife of legendary sprinter Milkha Singh, Nirmal Kaur was battling the deadly virus at a hospital in Mohali for over 19 days. She was reportedly admitted to the hospital on May 26 and was on High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) and Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) support since June 4, according to a leading daily.

The 85 years old was cremated on Sunday evening as informed in a statement from the family. The legendary sprinter could not attend the cremation as he continues to be in the ICU of PGIMER. Nirmal Kaur, who married Milkha Singh on May 5, 1963, is survived by her husband, three daughters Dr. Mona Singh, Aleeza Grover, Sonia Sanwalka and son Jeev Milkha Singh.

Nirmal Kaur also worked as the director of sports for women in the Punjab sports department. Apart from that, she was the joint director sports, Chandigarh, and director sports, Chandigarh, after her retirement from Punjab. Nirmal was also associated with the affairs of the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust and would often help needy players and children.
