After leaving the critics and audience stunned with his directorial Court, writer and director Chaitanya Tamhane's The Disciple was among the 18-films selected for the 77th Venice Film Festival competition this year. The Marathi-language film, took India to the festival after 2 decades. The last Indian film in the competition was Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding, which won the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion in 2001. The film was screened on Friday.
The trailer of the highly-acclaimed film was released on Friday and introduced to the character of Sharad Nerulkar, played by Aditya Modak, an established classical singer. The Disciple revolves around a classical vocalist who has devoted his life to music and is struggling to balance his craft's centuries-old traditions and the pressures of life in contemporary Mumbai.
In 2014, Chaitanya's Court had premiered at 71st Venice Film Festival for Best Film in the Horizons category and the Luigi De Laurentiis award for the director. The film highlighted the ills of Indian legal system through the trial of an ageing singer. The film won the award in the Orizzonti section that runs parallel to the main Venice Film Festival competition.
