Shoojit Sircar talks about shooting 'Gulabo Sitabo' in congested areas of Lucknow, says 'almost nobody could recognise Amitabh Bachchan'

The trailer of Shoojit Sircar's Gulabo Sitabo, is finally out, and it puts spotlight on how the the film's lead actors, Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, foster a unique bond amid banter and chaos. Big B is seen as Mirza, the landlord of an old depleted 'haveli' (mansion) in the heart of Lucknow, named Fatima Mahal, while Ayushmann is his shrewd tenant, Baankey. The film will premiere worldwide on June 12 on Amazon Prime Video.

Ahead of film's OTT release, the filmmaker spoke about how Amitabh Bachchan, who sports a long beard, spectacles and a prosthetically-pronounced nose, shot crucial parts of Gulabo Sitabo in congested areas of Lucknow without attracting attention from locals. "During his breaks between takes, Bachchan sir would often walk around the quaint bylanes and mingle with the locals. Strangely, even as the people recommended the landmarks to visit in Lucknow, they had no clue they were interacting with the legend," Shoojit told a leading daily.

Shoojit further talked about how he was apprehensive about filming major sequences in the heart of the city, considering the actor would be mobbed by enthusiastic fans. "As we wanted the scenes to be authentic, we shot them in the congested streets of Hazratganj and Chowk, and the charming alleys of old Lucknow. We would try to finish the shoot within an hour, so as not to draw a crowd. Interestingly, few people realised that a shoot was underway, and almost nobody recognised Bachchan. That was our aim — we did not want him to look like Amitabh Bachchan in the film, we wanted him to look and sound like Mirza," he shared.

Gulabo Sitabo is written by Juhi Chaturvedi and produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar.
