11 horror films that will scare the daylights out of you before you watch Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship’

After uplifting our 'josh' with Uri: The Surgical Strike, Vicky Kaushal is all set to explore the horror genre in Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship. The film, which will see Vicky as a bereaved shipping officer, revolves around an abandoned ship named Sea-Bird that lies abandoned along the coast.

The trailer of the film has already amped up the excitement. But before you watch the film on February 21, let’s not forget that from Bollywood to Tollywood, there are some scary experiences to evoke 'darr' within you.

Raat (1992) 

Written, directed and produced by Ram Gopal Varma, this Hindi-Telugu bilingual supernatural thriller was about a girl being possessed by a spirit, who attempts several murders. Starring Revathi, the film continues to haunt the audience with its chilling visuals. 

 

Raaz (2002)

Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film starred Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea as a couple who have moved to Ooty to save their failing marriage. But instead of finding marital bliss, Bipasha ends up in a haunted house only to find that her husband is part of the ghostly conspiracy, which she needs to escape from.

Bhoot (2003)

This another horror film by Ram Gopal Varma featured Urmila Matondkar as the possessed lady, while Ajay Devgn played her helpless husband. Based on how a ghost seeks revenge by possessing Urmila’s body, the film tapped into the right note of horror.

Chandramukhi (2005)

The Tamil comedy horror starred Rajinikanth, Prabhu, Jyothika and Nayantara leading an ensemble cast. It is based on a woman who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, how it affects her family and why a psychiatrist intends to solve the case while risking his life.

Arundhati (2009)

The Telugu dark fantasy horror film featured a brave queen who battles an evil mystic. However, things take a turn when generations later, it comes back to haunt her descendants. Starring Anushka Shetty, the film is also the second highest-grossing Telugu film of all-time. 

Muni 2: Kanchana (2011)

Directed by Raghava Lawrence, the Tamil horror comedy film was a sequel to his installment of Muni film series. Starring Raghava himself, the film sees him as a man who is possessed by a ghost. However, the most interesting part is when the ghost turns out to be a transgender woman who wants to take revenge on an MLA. What follows is a gripping narrative that scares you in intervals.

 

Golpo Holeo Shotti (2014)

The Bengali suspense supernatural thriller film revolved around a pizza delivery boy in a relationship with a ghost novel writer Anuradha. However, several strange happenings dive deep into his psychological disorder where he starts to question his girlfriend’s existence. 

Shob Bhooturey (2017)

The Bengali drama features Abir Chatterjee as Aniket, who along with his editor of his father's magazine and a woman who can see ghosts, travels to a village haunted by the spirits of dead children. The film follows his attempt to free the village from the curse of the ghosts.

 

Lapachhapi (2017)

This Marathi film is about a couple who moves into a new house only to realise that it is haunted by evil spirits. As they begin to possess their baby, the mother takes the onus to free her child. It revolves around age-old horror practices. 

Pari (2018)

The supernatural horror film starring Anushka Sharma as a victim of abuse Rukhsana revolved around the concept of Ifrit and Aulad Chakra, a satanic cult in Bangladesh aiming to propagate the bloodline of Ifrit. Anushka’s vulnerable appeal makes you end up wanting for more. 

Tumbbad (2018)

Starring Sohum Shah, the film is a mythological horror story about a goddess who created the entire universe. It revolves around the consequences when humans build a temple for her first-born and the following search for a hidden treasure under it. It’s novel plotline and scary visuals were enough to make you go breathless. 

Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship (2020)

In the film, Vicky Kaushal as a shipping officer will be seen saving a girl, who he believes is real. It has been claimed that the film is based on a true accident that took place in Mumbai. It is the first film of a horror franchise backed by Karan Johar.
