South Korean film Parasite, Directed by Bong Joon Ho created history at the 92nd Academy Awards by clinching Best Director, Best Picture, Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars 2020. However, the fans of Tamil actor Vijay are convinced that the film is inspired by Minsara Kanna. Now, producer PL Thenappan has informed a news agency that he will be filing a case seeking compensation from the makers of Parasite. Thenappan told the publication, “With the help of an international lawyer, I will be filing a case against the makers of Parasite. They have lifted the plot from my film Minsara Kanna. When they find out that some of our films have been inspired by their films, they file cases so we can also do that.”
KS Ravikumar, the director of Minsara Kanna also had something to say on the subject. He said, “Even though Minsara Kanna served as an inspiration, I am happy that Parasite has received an Oscar. As for filing a case, the decision rests on the producer.” Twitter has been abuzz with fans comparing the two films and saying that the South Korean film is a blatant rip-off. However, both films are starkly different. Minsara Kanna has Vijay as a wealthy boy who works as a soloist at the home of a businesswoman (played by Khushboo) and eventually employs every member of his family at her house. He does this for love. Kamal Haasan’s film Kadhala Kadhala has a similar story, as well as a lot of Telugu films and even the Malayalam movie Odurathaman.
On the other hand, Bong Joon Ho’s film is a black comedy about a family of four who gets embroiled in a string of unusual events at their employer’s home.
