Deepika Padukone’s film Chhapaak has received rave reviews from the critics although the film has failed to take off at the box office, that has not lessened the actress’s admirers. Her visit to the JNU campus before the release of the film also sparked a debate and many people condemned and questioned the move. However, one voice that has come in support of her is of Union Minister and BJP leader Babul Supriyo. However, he said that meeting a specific group of students on the JNU campus and ‘ignoring’ others during promotions of Chhapaak has not ‘gone down well’ with some people.
Supriyo said that the names of some of the members of the group whom Deepika met have now surfaced as the accused in connection to the violence propagated at the varsity. However, he slammed the trolls for making derogatory remarks about Deepika. Defending Deepika and dismissing the online trolls, he said, “Nowadays people write and speak anything even if it is abusive on social media. Deepika's visit to JNU and meeting those, whose names are now being surfaced as accused (in connection with the violence in the university), and not meeting the other groups did not go down well with some people.”
He further said, “Despite that, if anyone abuses or uses harsh words (against her on the issue), I condemned them. The use of any kind of abusive word at any forum should not be done. I am a big admirer of Deepika Padukone. Even I have named my younger daughter as 'Naina' after Padukone's character in her film Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.”
Supriyo was addressing a press conference in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Chhattisgarh's Durg district where he accused the opposition parties of spreading false propaganda. He also reiterated the government’s stand and said that the legislation is not aimed at snatching away citizenship of people in the country. He said that Home Minister Amit Shah had clarified all doubts of all parties on CAA in the parliament before it was passed.
