In the current season of sequels and remakes, the rumour of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 being on cards made a strong buzz across media. As per reports last month, Kartik Aaryan is said to step into Akshay Kumar's shoes for the sequel and now in the latest development, we hear Anees Bazmee will be replacing Priyadarshan as the director. As per reports of a leading daily, Anees, better known for comedy films like Ready, Singh Is Kinng and Welcome, wants to explore the space of horror comedy and hence will be taking the franchise ahead. It is also stated that Anees will spend the next few days developing the screenplay.
"After slapstick, family and youth-centric comedies, Anees wanted to explore the space of a horror-comedy and will spend the next few months developing the screenplay," the source told the daily.

Anees who recently wrapped his upcoming film Pagalpanti featuring John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Kriti Kharbanda and Ileana D'Cruz, was in plans to kickstart another venture with Disha Patani and Kartik. However, the film will now resume once Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2's work is done. "That film will now take off only after Anees is done with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2," the source informed.
Coming to the sequel of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, it was Bhushan Kumar, the producer of the film to come up with a spin-off considering the success of films like Stree and Golmaal Again that belong to the same genre. The prequel was directed by Priyadarshan and featured Vidya Balan, Akshay and Shiney Ahuja in central roles along with Ameesha Patel, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and others in important roles. The film was inspired by Rajinikanth's 2005 Tamil film Chandramukhi, which itself was a remake of Mohanlal's 1993 Malayalam movie Manichitrathazu.
Talking about Kartik, he is currently shooting for Pati, Patni Aur Woh remake with Ananya Panday and Bhumi Pednekar after wrapping Imtiaz Ali's untitled film co-starring Sara Ali Khan. Post this, he will start with Karan Johar's Dostana 2 with Janhvi Kapoor.
