Roohi Afza: Rajkummar Rao’s and Janhvi Kapoor’s film changed title to avoid controversy with century-old rose concentrate?

Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor have already begun shooting for debutant director Hardik Mehta’s film Roohi Afza. When the film was announced earlier this year, it was named Rooh Afza but now the title has suddenly undergone a change and is called Roohi Afza instead. Rooh Afza is a well-known, century-old rose concentrate that is revered in India and Pakistan. The concentrate is manufactured by Hamdard Laboratories and is widely used as a cooling drink, in desserts and milkshakes.

The question on the name change is that did the makers of the concentrate object to the title of the film as they might not like the idea of a spookfest to be associated with their most famous brand. The film is produced by Dinesh Vijan who has not offered any explanation on the name change. Since Janhvi plays a double role of Roohi and Afza the film could have been titled Roohi Afza right at the outset.

Apparently, the film revolves around a singing ghost who puts grooms to sleep and possesses their brides. In a bid to keep the ghost at bay, women come together to keep the groom awake through the first night. Talking about her role, Janhvi recently said during an awards show, “The shooting of the film has been going on really well. Whether you call me superstitious or old-fashioned, I feel if you talk more about your film, it will catch the evil's eye. So, I will not speak much about the film. I feel fortunate to be part of this film and to be working with people who are involved in it.”

Vijan had expressed his happiness of casting Janhvi in the lead. He said, “For the female lead, we needed someone who could portray two contrasting personalities with ease and Janhvi stood out, she really connected with the script. Her talent is still raw, but she is excited about being moulded. The script is young, refreshing and totally crazy, and she is exactly that.” Co-producer and writer Mrighdeep Singh Lamba also showered praises on Janhvi and said, “Janhvi needed to oscillate between two characters which are poles apart. You will fall in love with her in one scene and won't believe she is the same girl in the next one. It's not an easy switch for an actor. It's the perfect casting.”

Roohi Afza is scheduled to release on March 20, 2020.
