Lucky it wasn't a dance-off: Alia Bhatt on matching steps with Madhuri Dixit in Kalank song Ghar More Pardesiya

The first song from Karan Johar’s period drama Kalank, titled Ghar More Pardesiya, was unveiled yesterday and it was nothing short of magnificent. Featuring Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Alia Bhatt, the melodious song has the mesmerising jugalbandi between the two actresses as they perform delightful Kathak steps with perfection. While everyone is enchanted to see Madhuri's Baahar Begum in the song, Alia's Roop has left the audience impressed beyond belief.

During a recent interaction with a leading daily, Alia was asked about matching steps with Madhuri, arguably the finest dancer in Bollywood, for the first time. To which she replied, "I was lucky that it wasn't a dance-off. Madhuri ma'am could sense my tension; she was constantly instructing me on how to conduct myself. She ensured I performed everything perfectly - from the expressions to the steps. The spins were the toughest part; the weight of the lehenga made it difficult to spin fast. I was worried about how I had fared, but once I finished the take, Remo sir [D'Souza, choreographer] gave me an okay. That was reassuring."

Interestingly, the makers have reserved the full version of the song for the big screen. "We want to leave a chunk for the movie. This song is visually opulent and has a cinematic quality," Alia insisted.

Kalank is rumoured to be a love story, conceptualized in the backdrop of the partition. Also starring Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha, the film is directed by Abhishek Varman and is scheduled to release on April 17.
