Ranveer Singh was the first person to hear Takht, nobody in my family knew about the film, reveals Karan Johar

Filmmaker Karan Johar has revealed that Ranveer Singh was the first actor to whom he had narrated the script of his upcoming film Takht. On a chat show with Ranveer, Karan said that he was sure of casting the actor in Takht soon after he had conceptualized the film. In fact, even before Karan’s family, Ranveer knew about Takht while the filmmaker admitted that he would have been really upset had the actor declined the offer.

Takht, to be directed by Karan Johar, stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Anil Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Janhvi Kapoor apart from Ranveer.

“When I thought of this film, I thought Ranveer Singh has to be in this film. That was my decision. I remember the narration. There would be a huge part in my heart which would’ve been crushed if for some reason you would’ve declined the offer, because I had you in mind for Takht always. You were the first person who heard it. Nobody in my family knew this film was ready. When I was narrating this nobody in my film family, except me, knew. You were the first narration I ever had on that film. So when you told me I was in some zone, it was also stress and nervousness because I was pitching a film to an actor who I really wanted. That did not happen to me in the past and the feeling of nervousness made me realize that this (movie) is special. I have always sat in a narration knowing an actor is going to do it,” Karan said on the show.

Ranveer, meanwhile, added that while Karan was narrating the script to him, “his eyes were red, body was flushed, hands were trembling and there was an aura around him. It was almost like he was tripping.” The actor was actually “taken aback” seeing Karan “immersed” in the script of the film.

Takht is not only my most challenging work but also a territory I’m totally out of. It’s a territory you (Ranveer) know better,” Karan said, as Ranveer added that the core of the film involves family dynamics, power play and emotion – a genre that Karan Johar has already mastered.

“No Karan. What is the core of the film? Family dynamics, relationship dynamics, power play, core emotional beats, the themes – greed, ambition, betrayal – all of these things are quintessentially Karan Johar. He is the master of this.”

Takht will release in 2020.
