Society has changed a bit but not as much: Sonam responds to Kareena’s questions on films around homosexuality

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja made an appearance on Kareena Kapoor Khan’s radio show What Women Want and discussed her new film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, based on same-sex relationships. While speaking about the film, Kareena told Sonam that while her film based on a romantic relationship between two girls has been released but a film on “gay love” has hardly been made.

Sonam did respond to Kareena's question as she said, "Society, in general, likes to control who women or men love. They are ageist, sexist and homophobic. And you just want to control it. So, I think when there is a little bit of conflict in a story, it just adds something to it. Film and art is just a reflection of what is going on in the society."

In this regard, can the perspective of the older generation change in order to accept the choice of orientation of children, Kareena asked, to which Sonam answered that films act as a medium to “entertain and educate” the audience while society has been accepting changes as such slightly.

"There is a change societally. In India, how people have to let relationships and let love be. There are still so many honor killings, there are still so many people who run away from their house or are disowned by their parents and family. But at the same time, I think films and art is such a medium that it can entertain and educate at the same time. So society has changed a little bit but not as much as it should," Sonam said.

Directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga also stars Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Rajkummar Rao. The film released on February 1.
