English Vinglish actor Adil Hussain’s film is Norway’s official entry for Oscars 2019

Actor Adil Hussain won the Best Actor award at the Amanda Award or the Norwegian National Awards recently. It is the Scandinavian country’s top national film honour. Adil won the award for the film What Will People Say and took to Twitter and expressed that the award is for all those who believe that art can break boundaries. The film was also declared as the Norwegian official entry into Oscars 2019 in the Best Foreign Language category consideration.

Adil wrote on Twitter, “Grateful to have received the Amanda Awards Norwegia National Awards for Best Actor in a leading role for, brilliantly directed by Iram Haq. This award is for Goalpara, Assam, India for all those who believe that art can break all boundaries of all kinds.” Adil grew up in the small town of Goalpara in Assam.

What Will People Say is co-produced by Norway, Germany, Sweden, France and Denmark. The film follows 16-year-old-girl Nisha, a Pakistani teenager in Norway who is sent back to her extended family in the subcontinent when she supposedly brings dishonour to her family’s reputation. The film is directed by Iram Haq and was extensively shot on Rajasthan, India.

Adil plays the role of a doting yet controlling father, Mirza, a hard-hearted Pakistani who expects his daughter to be home right after school and help his wife mind the house. Adil had already won the Kanon Award at Kosmorama film festival for his portrayal which is Norway’s equivalent of the Academy Awards.

Talking about the film Adil reportedly said, “One of the casting directors in India contacted me and then I spoke to the director. I really liked the script. I had also liked her first film. This film opened in Toronto International Film Festival and has travelled to many others. The film was very successful in Norway where it ran for six months.”

Adil is well-known for works in films like Mukti Bhawan and English Vinglish in which he played late veteran actor Sridevi’s husband. He will also be seen in Love Sonia.
