22 years after DDLJ, Kajol says filming train scene with SRK was a ‘mess’

Almost 22 years after Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released, the actress, during an interview with a leading website, spoke about the famous train scene and said that SRK’s Raj should have pulled the chain instead of making her character, Simran, run at the station to catch the train.

The train scene in the Aditya Chopra-directed film is considered to be one of the most iconic sequences shot in the history of Indian cinema. But filming this particular sequence was considerably difficult, Kajol said in the interview, adding that it was a “mess”.

The scene in question is the climax of DDLJ, wherein Raj is seen leaving on a train while Simran pleads with her father Baldev (Amrish Puri) to allow her to go with him. Baldev, thus, is finally compelled to let go of Simran as she runs across the station to catch the train – Raj, thereafter, extends his hand to her, thereby resulting in their ‘happily ever after’ moment.

“Honestly, we were worried about the heat and getting cranky, my hair was frizzling out. The train wasn't moving at the right speed that it should have. We couldn't do retakes because the train had to go ahead and come back which would take some 20 minutes. It was a mess. Actually, Raj should have just pulled the chain instead of making me run like a crazy person. In hindsight, of course, it's become an iconic scene but I can't take any credit for it. It's all Adi (director Aditya Chopra),” Kajol said during her interview with the website.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of the highest-grossing films in the Hindi film industry and won numerous awards, including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The film also marked Aditya Chopra’s debut as a director, who also made movies including Mohabbatein, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Befikre.

Cut to 2018. Kajol is currently gearing up for the release of her new film Helicopter Eela – in which she stars as a single mother and an aspiring singer. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, Helicopter Eela co-stars Riddhi Sen and will release on September 7.
