Karan Johar’s directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai will complete 20 years since its release in October and reminiscing old memories from the set, Rani Mukerji and Nikkhil Advani spoke about an interesting incident – a secret so far - during an interview with a magazine. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai co-starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol while Rani was cast as the actor’s first wife in the film. Nikkhil was the chief assistant director to Karan while designer Manish Malhotra was responsible for the costumes.

The entire cast and crew were filming abroad and Rani was all set to shoot for a particular scene with SRK. For the part, Rani had to wear a mangalsutra and Manish, soon after, realised that he had forgotten to bring one from India, Nikkhil said. Needless to mention, Manish was terribly apprehensive to inform Karan about it.

It was a stressful moment for Manish until he had a brainwave. While shooting the scene, he apparently left the location to get a mangalsutra and guess what he did? Rani said that the designer “practically accosted” her mother Krishna Mukherjee, asking her to lend her mangalsutra to her daughter for the scene. “He literally got her to take it off her neck,” Rani told the magazine.

Well, Rani’s mother, who accompanied her abroad, finally had to agree and Manish returned to set with the mangalsutra. Manish, in fact, also told Karan that the mangalsutra “matched Rani’s orange sari”. The filmmaker was certainly glad but did he get to know the truth later?

The answer is…yes! After the end of the schedule, Manish told Karan about the mangalsutra episode and the filmmaker said that he was “grateful” to have been unaware of the scenario during the shoot or else “he might have popped a blood vessel”, as explained in the magazine.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai released in 1998 and was a blockbuster, apart from being a Karan Johar favourite, of course.
