Akshay Kumar finally speaks about GOLD's comparisons with Chak De! India

Akshay Kumar's next GOLD is about Indian hockey team's first gold medal win for an independent India. The actor is excited about the film and is confident that the audience would love the story, which he says was 'important to be told'.

Akshay plays the character of Tapan Das, the manager of the team, who motivates and brings together the 11 hockey players to play to win gold. Since it's a film about hockey with all that dash of nationalism, several comparisons were being made between GOLD and Chak De! India, the 2007 film starring Shah Rukh Khan.

However, Akshay calls such comparisons 'frivolous'. He commented on the same while talking to the media and said, "Everything will be a competition. For me, it is all about doing a good film. Chak De... was a different story, GOLD is different. It is frivolous to even think like that or competing with that film. Don't compare it, it is all different".

He also gave away some details about his character and said, "He is a controversial guy. He is a drunk and a cheater. But within a year, he brought 11 people together, made a team and went for Olympics, won the gold medal. I felt this story was unbelievable and needed to be told".

Akshay is all praises for his director, Reema Kagti. He wants to 'saluter her' for doing justice to the subject. He said, "Reema is a tough master, she handled the sports thing very well. I salute her. It is commendable. It is a tough film to handle as you are taking the audience to the time period of 1936, then 1947 and 1948, she had to do so much homework. To make a film in that era is a very difficult job".

GOLD releases on August 15.
