Sanjay Dutt defends 'Sanju', says no one will spend Rs 30-40 cr on whitewashing his image

Ranbir Kapoor starrer Sanju has created havoc at the box office, the film is shattering records left, right and centre. While Ranbir’s acting has been appreciated by one and all, the biopic based on Sanjay Dutt’s life and directed by Rajkumar Hirani has received flak for attempting to whitewash the actor’s image. Apart from Ranbir, Vicky Kaushal who plays the role of Sanjay’s best friend in the film has received immense praise for his performance. Veteran actor Paresh Rawal has also been lauded for portraying Sunil Dutt in the film. However, many critics, as well as a section of society, feel that this was a film that could have been avoided being made.

Hirani has been accused of making the film in the lovable Munnabhai way in order to portray Sanjay as the victim of circumstances, who made a series of wrong choices but is essentially a man with a golden heart. Now, finally, Sanjay reacted to the allegations of Sanju being an attempt to whitewash his tainted image in the public's eye. The actor gave an interview to a leading news channel and rubbished these claims saying that an amount of about Rs 30-40 crore was too much money to spend on changing someone’s image.

On the allegations, Sanjay quoted, “I just want to say that Munna Bhai was already made, that avatar was already out. I don't think anyone would spend Rs 30-40 crore to change his image. That is too much of an amount. I have told the truth and the truth has been accepted by India, and the box office collection shows that.” When asked whether the film depicts the real Sanjay Dutt, the actor said that he’s never been a dark person.

“Why do you think so many people love me? There is nothing dark about me. Growing up the way I did - it was no different than a usual teenager or youngster. There was nothing special about being Mr. Sunil Dutt's son. I made mistakes - a little more. I even went to jail for it which I don't regret," claimed the actor.

Sanju is swiftly racing towards the Rs 300 crore mark and is all set to smash a few more records. Meanwhile, on the work front, Sanjay will be seen in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3, he will also be teaming up with Ranbir in the film Shamshera. He is producing the film Prasthaanam under his home banner and star in it opposite Manisha Koirala and Ali Fazal.
