Here’s why Sanjay Dutt believes he makes the perfect gangster

We have oohed and aahed over his deadly avatar in the trailer of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3. Sanjay Dutt plays a character with decidedly grey shades, apparently the older son who is back to reclaim his inheritance.

Strutting across the screen, he has the lion’s share of meaty lines. He fills the shoes of Randeep Hooda and Irrfan Khan, who had played the titular dons in the first two films – Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster and 2013’s Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns also directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. And boy, does he fill them well!

Even though his comeback vehicle, Bhoomi (2017) sank at the box office, Dutt does seem to have a winner in his next outing, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3. Speaking about the film recently, he said, “I am fond of Tishu (Tigmanshu)'s work. When he and producer (Rahul Mittra) approached me with the film, I did not think twice. I have gone with Tishu's vision for the character and have done exactly what he told me.”

Dutt is quite unfazed by the fact that he is a popular choice for anti-hero roles. In fact, he goes so far as to quip, “I think being a gangster comes naturally to me. I have been to jail too. They were looking for a polished, khandaani gangster, and I fit the bill perfectly.” This man does tell it like it is, doesn’t he! Speaking about his character, who is emotional by nature, he had also shared, “He will go to great lengths to achieve his desires.”

Director Dhulia, who has collaborated with Dutt for the first time, is touched by how completely Sanjay trusted his judgement. He shares, “Not once did Sanjay check the monitor during the shoot, like most actors do to see how they look. He would tell me if I was fine with the shot, he was too.” Gangsters really couldn’t be bothered to obsess over monitors, right?
