A suitable choice: Sanya Malhotra could greenlight Mira Nair’s upcoming series

Indian American film director Mira Nair, best known for her stunning films including Mississippi Masala, The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay, has another epic saga in the making. She is in the process of finalizing the cast for an eight-episode BBC production of Vikram Seth’s renowned novel, A Suitable Boy.

Nair recently shared that she has been scouting for talent for the series. “I have finalized 40 percent of the cast,” she revealed, adding that Tabu, who had starred in The Namesake, will also feature in A Suitable Boy. “Also, Boman Irani, Roshan Seth, and several young, delectably incredible men and women,” said Mira.

One of those “delectably incredible women” could just be Dangal’s Sanya Malhotra. Buzz has it that Nair has approached Sanya with a role. We can’t help wonder if it is the lead role of the character Lata, who is the central figure for whom a suitable boy is sought. Apparently Sanya is thrilled about the film – but naturally! However, she is yet to sign on the dotted line.

Sanya, who has constantly veered towards content-driven films, had recently explained, “While filming Dangal, I remember having a conversation with Nitesh Tiwari sir about how some actors are particular about the screen time. He said it’s important for an artist to not care about how long the role is but what they can give to the script. That advice stayed with me. Since then, I’ve made sure that if I like the script, can imagine myself as the character and live the screenplay, I’ll do the film. That will be the only criteria.”

This will clearly be her motivation when signing on Mira Nair’s series as well. Sanya already has a great line-up of films. Recently, she shared glimpses of her upcoming film Pataakha, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj no less. Originally titled Chhuriyan, the film is said to be based on Charan Singh Pathik’s short story, Do Behnein. She also stars opposite Ayushmann Khurrana in Badhaai Ho, a coming-of-age story of a family as it grapples with some unexpected news.
