The charmed life: After relaxation and retail in New York, Karan will start casting for his next

Birthday plan in New York

On the occasion of his 46th birthday, the filmmaker has gifted himself five days of vacation in his favourite city, New York. Having worked non-stop for the last year (including Sundays) he shares that he is happy his office has actually granted him a short break. He plans to indulge in his three favourite ‘R’s — rest, relaxation and retail. “I just want some me time and what better way than to do what I’m doing,” he quips.

Raking it in with Raazi

All smiles at his Dharma Productions with the success of their recent Alia Bhatt-starrer, Raazi. Karan declares that the profits will be calculated in due course; right now they are all celebrating the film. He is grateful to Meghna Gulzar for this empowering film that is still winning hearts. “Raazi is an important production for us and we are truly happy with the way it is going,” he declares.

Dhadak responsibility

His production house’s Dhadak is a big responsibility. He is hoping that the Hindi remake of Nagraj Manjule’s super hit Sairat (Marathi) matches up to the original. He also believes that they have a special responsibility towards newcomers Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. Even after the film releases, Dharma will stay invested in Janhvi and Ishaan because introducing new talent is a long-standing commitment. “We don’t just invest in their careers; we also invest in them emotionally and we are committed to hand-hold them for as long as they wish,” he points out.

Proud mentor

He is immensely proud of the strides his three ‘students’ – Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan – have made since he launched them on October 19, 2012. He still speaks to each of them at least once a day and is thrilled with the way their careers have shaped up and with the kind of people they have become. Maintaining that he did not foresee their wonderful achievements, he now feels blessed to have parented the trio.

Parenting the twins

Between Karan and his mother Hiroo Johar, they are perfectly coordinated to co-parent his twins, Roohi and Yash. His mother’s maternal instincts sees her give the twins and him the best care and affection, he says. They take turns taking breaks to ensure one of them is always staying home with the twins.

Up ahead…

There is excitement that he has finalized the script for his next directorial venture that will most likely roll next year. Karan reveals that he will cast for his new film after returning from New York.
