That’s sad: Fearing harassment, Aamir could shelve his Mahabharata project

Blame it on the growing mood of intolerance sweeping certain sections of society but Aamir just might have canned his dream Mahabharata project as of now…

The actor, who had been gung-ho about his dream project, a five-part version of the epic on the film screen, is now in a quandary about whether he should continue with his plan. It has become increasingly clear that filmmakers attempting history or mythology are at the receiving end of the radicals’ stick. Padmaavat had to face immense coercion and pressure from fringe elements before the film finally released. The upcoming Kangana starrer, Manikarnika also stirred the ire of radical groups. Considering the current scenario of creative harassment, Aamir is reconsidering his decision to recreate the mythological, which is bound to elicit protests from certain quarters. He is seriously weighing the pros and cons and might well place the project on the backburner for now.

A sign of impending trouble was already spotted recently when his ambitious adaptation of the Mahabharata galvanized trolls into action. It had started with a tweet from a troll (who appears to be a Frenchman living in India) last month, which read: “Why should Aamir Khan, a Muslim, play in most ancient and sacred of Hindu epics, the Mahabharata? Would Muslims allow a Hindu to play life of Mohamed?”

This comment had even elicited a reaction from writer Javed Akhtar, who asked, “I would like to know which foreign agency is paying you to spread this kind of perverse and poisonous thoughts in our country...You obviously you know nothing about our Indian traditions and culture.”

Aamir’s dream project has already whipped up considerable interest. Still in the planning stages, the budget has been touted to be a mind-blowing Rs.1000 crore. Buzz had it that India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani would be funding this mammoth film series. Speculation was also rife about whether Aamir planned on playing Krishna or Karna. These details are immaterial as of now, as Aamir rethinks his dream project itself.
