Varun Dhawan clearly won’t rest until he has smashed his earlier ‘Govinda’-type image and made his mark as a multi-faceted actor and star. Known for his enthusiastic and cheerful mien, his contagious energy had marked him out as the ideal Bollywood masala hero. Combined with great dancing skills, he was even dubbed the Govinda of this generation.
That, however, was then. Since a while now he has balancing entertainers like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya, Badrinath ki Dulhaniya, and Judwaa 2 with more eclectic fare. He had won rave reviews for daring to step out of the box and do Badlapur. His role of a vengeful and angry man in the film definitely delivered a stunning blow to his usually casual, chirpy image.
In the pipeline now is October, Shoojit Sircar’s story about love. The trailer shows him to be in complete contrast to the usual loud and bright characters he is known for playing. His choice of director and film itself is shocking, knowing Sircar’s gift for realistic even poetic slice of life films like Piku, Pink and Vicky Donor.
Further showcasing Varun’s ‘acting’ as opposed to his performing side, will be Sui Dhaaga, a heart-warming story set in the 80s. Rooted in the Indian milieu, it celebrates self-reliance. The actor looks most unlike his usual self in the publicity stills of the film.
Now Varun, who is one of the most sought after actors given his unbroken streak of hits, could well give the nod to Imtiaz Ali. He is supposedly being wooed by the maker of such charming, quirky films as Jab We Met and Tamasha, for a romantic film.
Buzz has it, the two have already met twice this month, and there are indications that Varun will most likely come on board for Imtiaz's next!
The leading lady will probably be decided as soon as Varun gives his nod to the love story. Knowing Imtiaz’s forte for films that are about finding love, inspiration or oneself, this will be another departure for Varun Dhawan, a film that could never be accused of being a Govinda-type entertainer.
