Sanjay Dutt gets musical: One of the five songs he wrote in jail to be used in Torbaaz

His time in jail was a highly emotional and life-changing experience for Sanjay Dutt. Incarcerated in the Yerawada Central Jail, he had found simple ways to cope with his imprisonment. Besides reading, making paper bags, and hosting a music programme for his co-prisoners, he had also taken to writing to give expression to his feelings. Now it turns out that one of the five songs he had written during his jail term at Yerwada will be used in his upcoming action-thriller, Torbaaz. The song in question is ‘O meri aangan ki chidiya hai tu…’, delving on a father-daughter relationship, which has been recreated in a melodious tune for the film by Dutt himself.

Filmmaker Rahul Mittra shares that the song is a very emotional one. When Sanju baba, as he is fondly called, hummed it to them during their recent meetings, they were so moved by it, they have even decided that the actor sing it himself. Added Rahul, “He has a great ear for music and has set it to tune himself.”

Despite rumours that shooting for the Sanjay Dutt-Nargis Fakhri starrer Torbaaz has been stalled, the film, according to Mittra, is very much on track. He reveals that they are shooting two major action sequences and three songs during the course of a 45-day schedule in Bishkek. Both Sanjay Dutt and Nargis Fakhri are part of the schedule. “We start on April 17 in Kyrgyzstan and will also be travelling to Uzbekistan,” shared Mittra.

Torbaaz is being produced by Rahul Mittra and Raju Chadha, and has been written and directed by Girish Malik. The film sees Nargis Fakhri play an NGO worker, Ayesha, who cares for refugee kids in war-torn Afghanistan. Sanjay essays the role of an army officer who teaches the young suicide bombers cricket in a bid to distract them from the violence that surrounds them. The couple is united in their desire to rebuild an Afghanistan that has been battered by years of war and devastation.

The second schedule in Bishkek has the unit travelling along the Silk Route through Central Asia. This will be followed by a short shooting schedule in Mumbai around June.
