Much as fans of Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani might want her to revisit her role as Shivani Shivaji Roy, it isn’t Mission No.1 on the actress’s list.

Despite rumours floating around ever since the film left a strong impact at the box office in 2014, there is nothing confirmed on the sequel front yet. And the actress will not settle for anything less than a power-packed theme, should they carry the franchise forward.
“I can’t do Mardaani 2 just for the heck of it,” Rani said recently when quizzed about the likelihood of the sequel. “It has to make sense to me. So, if we get an equally powerful subject to deal with then I will definitely do Mardaani 2,” she said, adding, “We are still looking for a good script — it is important for me to have a convincing script.”

Mardaani had definitely aced it on that score. A crime thriller based on human-trafficking in India, it told the story of a policewoman whose interest in the case of a kidnapped teenage girl leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking by the Indian mafia.

Rani had won considerable applause for her role as the tough police officer in this hard-hitting and impactful film. It was her last film before she took a break from acting, to have her baby Adira in December 2015. Set to make her comeback post motherhood with Hichki, she plays the unusual role of a teacher who suffers from Tourette syndrome.

With this film too, it was the convincing script that was the deciding factor. “I was looking for a script that would challenge and excite me, and Hichki came my way. Each one of us has a weakness that pulls us back, it could be a disability or any condition but if we just look at it as simply a hiccup, we can emerge as a winner. It won't come in the way of achieving your dreams. Hichki is built on this positive premise and I have decided to take it up,” she pointed out.
