Bill Gates’s 42.3 million followers now know about this Akshay starrer!

Microsoft co-founder and founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates is now better known for his philanthropic endeavors, having stepped down as Chairman of Microsoft in 2014. He had donated large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was established in 2000, and is a passionate promoter of change for the better.

As 2017 draws to a close, Gates has tweeted, “There’s no denying that 2017 was a really tough year... but it also delivered some amazing moments of hope and progress. Here are some inspiring tweets that you may have missed…”

He went on to share 9 inspirational stories from 2017 which inspire hope and enthusiasm for the coming year - and our very own Toilet: Ek Prem Katha comes in at #3!

“Toilet: A Love Story, a Bollywood romance about a newlywed couple, educated audiences about India’s sanitation challenge,” he shared with his 42.3 million followers. This nod to the film for its social impact is an unexpected honor for the team behind the film, which talked about India’s sanitation challenge.

Gates’s other tweets dwelled on the significance of health and social awareness, including Maldives’ and Bhutan’s successful attempt at eliminating measles.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, directed by Shree Narayan Singh and starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles, is based on the age-old issue of open defecation and the methods that can be adopted to curb it. The film also promoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cleanliness initiative - Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The film, a satirical comedy, had released on August 11 this year, to positive reviews. It had been praised for holding up a mirror to society, “showing how superstitious villagers, lazy administration and corrupt politicians have actually converted India into the world’s largest cesspool, with women especially treated more insensitively than cattle!”

On another note, its endorsement of the government’s Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan was dubbed so serious “that after a point it starts to look like that Priyanka Bharti ad featuring Vidya Balan!”

For Akshay and team, of course, this will be validation to really cheer about!
