Traditional Allure… It’s lilting, it’s infectious and it will want you to get on the dance floor and do the Ghoomar! Rajasthan’s most popular folk dance is chiefly performed by veiled women in colourful ghagras. It has deservedly been ranked fourth in the list of Top 10 Local Dances Around the World!
Ghoomar involves performers pirouetting while moving in and out of a wide circle. The name of the dance itself is inspired by the twirling movements of the dancers, as they whirl around. Performed mainly by the women of the Rajput community during auspicious and joyous occasions, it is a beautiful embodiment of the spirit of celebration. And Deepika Padukone in and as Padmavati, does it complete justice!
Surreal Experience… Apparently, Deepika found the dance sequence one of the most difficult that she and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali have shot – and they have done their fair share of them in Goliyon Ki Raasleela – Ram-Leela, and Bajirao Mastani. What’s more, it turned out to be a surreal experience for Deepika.
She narrates that the shooting of the film began with this song and as she approached her mark for the first shot, she suddenly felt a chill run through her body. She likens it to almost as if Padmavati’s soul had entered her body. “That feeling still lingers and will continue for years to come,” she vows. We felt the goosebumps too!

The folklore inspired soundtrack composed by SLB himself will leave you spellbound.
But be warned, it is much more difficult than it looks and takes years to learn. Not all of us are blessed with talent like Deepika’s to master an elaborate dance form in a matter of days!

Twirling without a break gives the heavily embroidered exquisite costumes a chance to be displayed in all their glory, designed by couturiers Rimple & Harpreet Narula. And if you can match Deepika’s record of 66 twirls while shooting for the song, well, you absolutely deserve an award for it!
