In the worst rains Mumbai has seen since July 2005 floods, today's downpour has got the city to a standstill. Citizens have been advised to stay in "unless absolutely necessary" or go home early after the city received, in three hours, nine times more rain than average.

While the low lying areas are flooded, the lifeline of Mumbai, local trains have come to a halt, with stations standing stranded. Autos, cabs and public transport are nowhere to be seen. Amidst Ganesh Chaturthi visarjan, beaches are on high alert.

In times of adversity, Bollywood celebrities have extended their concern on social media handles and are praying for the safety of the Mumbaikars.
