TV actor Ravi Dubey to play the role of Laxman in Kunal Kohli’s Ramayana?

We had reported earlier that director Kunal Kohli is in the process of making a film on Hindu epic Ramayana. The man who has given hit films like Fanaa and Hum Tum has been planning to make a film on the epic for some time. Kunal had told a leading daily, “I’m producing and directing a movie on the Ramayana. I’m casting relatively new actors for it.” The epic will be made in two parts.

Apparently, Kunal had taken the project to many corporate houses who responded negatively. Finally, the director has an investor on board and the film is ready to roll soon. As reported by an entertainment portal, Kunal has roped in a south Indian actor to play the role of Maryada Purushottam Lord Ram and is planning to cast TV actor Ravi Dubey for the role of Laxman.

The director had previously stated that the film will neither be a retelling nor an adaptation but will be like the epic is. Talking about his treatment he said, “I’m making it like the epic is. I’m excited about it.” The film is slated for a 2019 release.

This is not the first time that the epic has been adapted for audiences. Ramanand Sagar’s serial Ramayana had a cult following and is still remembered for bringing the epic to people’s living room. It starred Arun Govil, Deepika and Dara Singh in the lead. An animated film was also made on the same by Japanese animators which became extremely successful. Sooraj Barjatya’s film Hum Saath Saath Hain was, in a way, an adaptation of the epic.
