Hit update: Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety enters 100-crore club, Raid grabs box office

It’s sweet news for Sonu, Titu and Sweety… The bromance vs. romance flick, which opened to packed houses, continues to hold strong. Luv Ranjan’s funny tale has found favour and how. The film, starring Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh in the lead roles, has been declared a super hit.

It has crossed the 100-crore mark at the domestic box office and collections stand at a whopping Rs.100.10 crore. In fact, the film has become the second highest grosser of 2018 after Padmaavat, no less!

Jubilant director Luv Ranjan said, “For me, my actors Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh are stars. And beyond them, it's the script that is the superstar.” He also pointed out that his film appeals specifically to the youth. “We always knew we were making a film that would appeal to the youth. Critics called the film anti-women, misogynistic... But that didn't bother me. I was looking beyond the criticism,” he declared.

Incidentally, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety had carved its name as the third biggest box office opening of 2018, after Padmaavat and PadMan. However, last week it was dethroned from that position by Ajay Devgn's Raid. This period crime thriller directed by Raj Kumar Gupta has edged itself into the third spot, pushing Sonu… to number 4.

Raid has amassed a total of Rs.46 crore so far at the box office. The film sees Ajay Devgn play an incorruptible IT officer. The film is doing exceptional business in the Hindi belt of UP and Bihar compared to other cities. Raid, which is set in 1981, tells the story of an IT officer in Lucknow, who takes on the powerful corrupt in his endeavour to help the poor.

The film has won appreciation for its cat-and-mouse games between Ajay Devgn and Saurabh Shukla. The smartly written dialogues evoke laughter, despite the plot being unconvincing at places.

The success of both films proves that the audience is more than open to different fare as long as it is engaging.
